The June 2023 HAF League outing was conducted on 25 June at West Woods Golf Club in Arvada, CO. Click the logo above if you'd like to visit their Web site. The League played the Sleeping Indian and Cottonwood 9s which seems to be the typical 18 hole setup.
It was a hot day following a period of very heavy rain. Accordingly, some parts of the course were a little soggy. It didn't detract too much from play overall, though. The course was in very good condition, especially given it's a municipal course. There were a few areas marked ground under repair that were too swampy to play. Greens were LIGHTNING fast, which was a surprise given the recent rain. That seems to be the way the greenskeeper likes them based on the experience of members of the group on this course. The fast greens didn't make the Dick Phelps design any easier. Members universally commented on the greens and the scores reflected the difficulty. As usual for Phelps courses on the front range, there are plenty of interesting hole designs that have multiple options for play. There is water on several of the holes that can be in play for aggressive players. There are also some very pretty vistas on the course like the Sleeping Indian formation visible from the 5th green on the course that bears that name and multiple views of the Denver skyline. The cost of those vistas is some very substantial elevation changes, especially on the Sleeping Indian 9. There are also some holes with a fair amount of distance between one green and the next tee. Walking this course is not for the faint of heart.
The practice facilities were probably the best of any municipal course the League has played. It's got a double-ended driving range with about 30 stations per side. They've also got a very large putting green and a pitching/chipping practice area that has practice bunkers. The pro shop was large and well stocked. The restaurant and lounge are also large and have a big outdoor seating area where the League was able to sit together, commiserate about the greens and determine results of the competition. Beverage selection was somewhat limited. The menu was large and all the food everyone has was hot, fresh and delicious. The only negative at the restaurant/lounge was the service was VERY slow.
Eleven of the 12 people that attended the outing chose to participate in the standard Stableford tournament with a quota. This was the league's first standard Stableford. Each player had a quota for the number of points they were expected to score. The quota was set to 36 minus each player's playing handicap (handicap index adjusted for difficulty from each player's assigned tees). The quota was subtracted from each player's total Stableford points scored during their round. The greatest number of points won. Jacob Skorka won with a +5 score and won $60. Sam and Dawn Ferris tied for second at +2 and won $25 each. Congrats to our winners! That last foursome kicked butt! The complete scoresheet for the event is available below in Excel and PDF formats.
