It was a perfect September day for golf at Green Valley Ranch - clear skies, slight breeze, mid-80s. Click their logo above if you'd like to remember it or get more information about it. The course was in typically great shape. Greens rolled on the fast side which seems to be how the superintendent/head pro like them. Some of the pins were in challenging spots. The course has a number of interesting holes that are challenging without being hard and offer plenty of ways to play them. Although no one in the group walked because riding carts were included in our rate, the course is set up to be very walkable - there are seldom more than a few dozen yards between one green and the next tee and there are no severe elevation changes. Those in the group that hadn't played the course really enjoyed it. Green Valley Ranch is one of the few courses in Colorado that allows advance booking, up to 60 days out. This, combined with the fact that it is such a high quality course, means we'll definitely play it again in the future.
The practice facilities are top notch, maybe the best of any public course in Colorado. There are a couple dozen hitting bays on the driving range with racks and included range balls at every position. There's a great pitching and sand practice area by the pro shop as well as a large putting green and a chipping area near the path to the first and 10th tees. There is a snack and beverage shop in the same area that makes getting refreshments at the turn a breeze. There is a comfort station every 3 holes or so with clean restrooms and a water bottle refill station. All in all, combining the quality of the course with the quality of the facilities, this just may be the best public golf course in the state. It's certainly the best one the HAF League has played so far.
Although there is a very good restaurant at the course, we did not eat there. Instead, we had a barbecue at the home of Scott O'Hare and his wife Kelly. Their home is beautiful inside and out. Scott and Kelly really went all out with a smorgasbord of chips and dips, brats, burgers and salads of all descriptions as well as water, beer and spirits. It was great for the League members to spend some time together outside of golf. Scott and Kelly have definitely set a high bar for what we hope will become an annual September tradition. Thanks, very much, to them both!
The competition this time was a 3-2-1, a competition for four-person teams. Everyone scored their own individual ball in normal stroke play fashion. Handicaps were used, with 90% of each particpant's handicap index allowed, a maximum allowance of 30 and max hole score of net double bogey. At the end of the round, a score for each team was calculated. The lowest three net scores for a team were added up on the first hole, the lowest 2 from the second and the lowest from the third were added together (hence 3-2-1). This pattern was carried through for each set of 3 holes for the round. The team with the lowest total won and took all the prize money ($10 entry). The results may be found below in Excel and PDF formats.
