The location for the July 2022 HAF League monthly outing was the Silver Course at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO. The outing took place on 31 July. Click on the logo if you'd like to visit their Web site to learn or remember more about them.
Thanks very much to Will Martin for his service to our country. It was that service that allowed us to play the Academy this time around. Will only got to play the front 9. Hopefully down the road we'll see him more.
It was a beautiful summer day for golf. We got sprinkles at the end of the round but it didn't detract from or affect play. The course was in excellent condition all around. The practice greens (there is a large one by first tees on both courses) rolled true and were in great shape. For future planning purposes, the other facilities are a little challenging to use. The driving range is on the small side - only about 15 hitting bays. It has no club racks so one has to bring their bag or lay their clubs on the ground. The chipping/pitching area is between the 10th hole of the Blue course and the range. It's a fairly long way from the clubhouse. Those that would want to use it should definitely plan extra time.
The clubhouse has multiple seating areas for getting together post-round. There is one downstairs that has beverages and a selection of typical American quick food. That area features both indoor and outdoor seating. The outdoor seating looks over the driving range and has nice views of the mountains. There is another bar upstairs that has lounge chairs and sofas and some outdoor table seating with great mountain views. The bar has a nice selection of spirits.
Everyone in attendance really liked the course. It's narrow and has some challenging greens. It is not hard just to be hard, though. It requires some thinking about ball position (for those that can hit it where they want, anyway). It is reasonably affordable, too. Given that it is a course that is always in great shape that's fun to play, the League will definitely be back!
We played a $5 Nassau this time around. Ken Moon's daughter, Jordan, come out with us for the first time. She cleaned house in the Nassau, winning 78% of the money. We'd love to have her come out again but she won't take us by surprise next time. 😄 The scoresheet with the results can be viewed/downloaded below in either Excel or PDF format.
