TL;DR
The location for the March 2025 HAF League monthly outing will be Plum Creek Golf Club on the southeast side of Castle Rock, CO off Plum Creek Parkway. Click on the logo if you'd like to visit their Web site.
The address of the course is:
331 Players Club Drive
Castle Rock, CO 80104
Their phone number is (303) 660-2200.
Plum Creek is a Pete Dye design. It's a fun, challenging course with Dye's typical design features, including long par 3s over hazards, sharp doglegs, railroad ties around greens complexes and firm, quick greens. It is managed by the same company that manages Bear Dance. It is almost always in top notch shape. The League has played it twice and thoroughly enjoyed it both times. The course has a considerable amount of elevation change. Walking is not advised.
They have a grass range with about 20 stations. There's a very large putting green and a separate chipping area. The have a beautiful new clubhouse in which the particpants will gather after the round to swap stories and award prizes.
Folks are asked to prepay for the outing in line with League policy. If someone responds to the outing invitation in the affirmative and subsequently determines they cannot attend, a full refund will be made if the outing coordinator is notified 48 hours in advance. The outing coordinator will be in touch with everyone if a weather cancellation happens.

Since this will be our first in-season round and many in the group are trying to shake off winter rust, we'll do a stroke play tourney using the Peoria handicapping system rather than use our USGA handicaps that are probably a few strokes low at the moment. Peoria is a way to devise a handicap for a round based on scores for that round. Folks will still be able to keep their own scores and post to GHIN as well as participate in the Peoria tournament.
There are a few different methods available to calculate a Peoria handicap. For the one we'll use, one par 3, one par 4 and one par 5 are chosen at random from both the front and back nine for a total of 6 holes used. Every particpant's Peoria handicap is based on the same holes. The total score over/under par from those six holes is added and then multiplied by 3 to get a playing handicap. Playing handicaps less than zero will be set to zero. 80% of the playing handicap is subtracted from each player's gross/total score to get their handicap adjusted score, then rounded to the nearest whole number for the final score. Max over par on each hole that is allowed for this purpose is triple bogey. Lowest net scores will win as in a typical stroke play/low net tournament.
To give an example, suppose for a given round holes 3, 4, 5, 12, 13 and 14 are chosen for the Peoria (unbeknownst to anyone ahead of time - more on this in a minute). Two of the golfers in a group have a card that looks like this:
| Player | ... | 3 | 4 | 5 | ... | 12 | 13 | 14 | ... | Total | Peoria | Net |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Par | ... | 4 | 5 | 3 | ... | 3 | 4 | 5 | ... | 72 | ||
| Bob | ... | 3 | 5 | 5 | ... | 7 | 4 | 6 | ... | 89 | 12 | 77 |
| Carol | ... | 3 | 5 | 3 | ... | 3 | 5 | 5 | ... | 78 | 0 | 78 |
Bob is a total of 5 over on those six holes - -1 on 3, +2 on 5, +3 on 12 (triple bogey max) and +1 on 14. Multiplying by 3 gives him a Peoria playing handicap of 15, 80% of which is 12. Carol's Peoria comes in at 0 - her birdie on 3 is cancelled by her bogey on 13 and 0 x 3 = 0. Bob's terrible play on those par 3s gives him the narrow win.
To avoid sandbagging on the handicap holes by the outing coordinator, the holes will be chosen by a person not involved in the tournament. There will be a spreadsheet prepared to make the calculations easier.
There is a $10 buy-in for people that want to particpate. Those that choose not to participate will simply play along with the others that share their tee time. They won't pay a buy-in and can't win prizes. Payouts will be determined based on the number of participants.
| Participants | 1st | 2nd | 3rd |

| 4 or less | 100% | - | - |
| 5-8 | 70% | 30% | - |
| 9 or more | 60% | 30% | 10% |

Our league uses 18Birdies to allow us to manage scores during and after a round. We can also communicate with one another before (to RSVP or ask questions), during (trash talk!) and after the round through the app, upload pictures of our outing and other good things. We can see an ongoing leaderboard of how our fellow members are doing. Oh, and just for keeping track of scores, it's free! We highly encourage it. If you're viewing this on an iOS device, click the icon above to download the app!
Use the Tournament Code in the Play section of the app to join the tournament and follow how your fellow golfers are doing on the course. Follow/friend your favorite player in the app to get notifications of round start and end and to be able to follow their progress.
Please validate your attendance and notify the outing coordinator by text of any changes. We encourage bringing guests! If you would like to invite someone, please send the coordinator their cell phone number in order to communicate information with them and share this Web site with them for more information.
