The May 2024 HAF League outing was played on 19 May 2024 at Colorado National Golf Club in Erie, CO. Click on the logo above if you'd like more information about the course. Colorado National Golf Club is the home course of the University of Colorado at Boulder golf team. The course was designed by Jay Morrish, a Colorado State alum. He worked with many of the luminaries in the architecture world including Robert Trent Jones, Sr., Jack Nicklaus and Tom Weiskopf with whom he collaborated on many famous courses as well as on top shelf Colorado courses like Castle Pines and Ravenna.
Colorado National is a links-style course, wide open with native grass rough and what few trees there are seldom in play. The course was in outstanding condition. The grass rough was just long enough to create a challenge without being punishing. The native areas were still regrowing from winter so it was still possible to find and play balls in them. The greens were in great shape - balls rolled well and speeds were neither fast nor slow. Restroom facilities on the course are well situated and clean. The course winds through a neighborhood but the houses are far enough from the course so as not be in play. The vistas of the Front Range are spectacular with Long's Peak featuring prominently on many of the holes. The day we played, the weather was mixed. It started and ended sunny but (typical of Colorado in the afternoon) we got some sprinkles and a bit of wind in the middle. All in all, though, the weather did not detract from the round.
Colorado National didn't allow walking on weekends during the time we played to keep up pace of play. Walking would not be for the faint of heart - there are substantial elevation changes and the course is long. The grass range is on the narrower side with only about a dozen hitting stations - something to keep in mind for those that want to warm up before their rounds. The chipping area has a practice bunker. The practice green is also on the small side but was representative of the greens on the course on the day we played.
The pro shop is jam packed with Buffs logo gear and a good selection equipment and apparel. The restaurant is large but we ate in the bar due to staffing at the time our round finished. The food was very tasty and prices were fair. Beverage selection was better than many places we've played. Service was friendly if a tad on the slow side (as mentioned, we finished late).
We played a Peoria competition with a $10 buy-in. Everyone that came to the outing participated. To the surprise of many (because he's a good golfer), Curt Balcerzak came out on top. Results may be found below, in Excel and PDF format.
