Notes
It was a beautiful day for golf. The eight people that went had a great time. Scott O'Hare, Jerry's buddy, had a sufficiently good time that he decided to join the league. We'll look forward to seeing Scott again at all of our upcoming outings!
King's Deer has a driving range and pratice green. The driving range is odd in that it slopes steeply downhill. They did allow hitting off of grass which was nice. The practice green was good.
The course was in subpar condition compared to other area courses. The greens were extremely tight, more like painted sand than grass. As a result, they were extremely fast. The fairways were in decent shape. However, the first cut of rough was long and anything beyond that was unmowed fescue and native flora. With the fairways being as narrow as they are, putting the ball in the fairway was paramount. The fairway bunkers were not maintained. Most had patches of grass growing in them. The way the range is constructed left dozens of balls on the 10th and 18th fairways.
The course is VERY long with a substantial distance between all of the holes. It's well over 9 miles to walk. To give one example, it's about 1/4 mile between the 8th and 9th holes, all uphill. Anyone considering walking will definitely want to take this into account. Because the course is so long on top of being challenging, it took over 5 hours to complete our round. We were keeping pace but the pace is slow.
The clubhouse and pro shop were excellent. The staff was very friendly. The pro shop has a good selection of essentials and King's Deer swag. They rent good quality clubs and rent better clubs for an upcharge which is a nice feature. The clubhouse has a HUGE selection of beers including a large number of local selections. They have a very large covered outdoor seating area.
All in all, while the clubhouse is a nice place to hang out, it is unlikely the league will return to King's Deer any time soon. The lacking quality of the course doesn't support the high price price.
